Abstract
This booklet is a project documentation of a short-term project titled ‘IDEAS ABOUT HOUSING Arkitektkonkurrencernes boligløsninger’.
Architectural competitions have been used to develop new living concepts reacting on current political, economical and social flows. Participation in an architectural competition provides the architects a possibility to reflect on the current social patterns, and to propose suitable spaces. In this light, the competition proposals represent the visions and dreams of the architects to the contemporary society.
“For most of the 20th century, design competitions have been an important part of the world of architecture and planning in Denmark. Competitions, sponsored by government organizations, housing associations, or private business, are usually requests to make proposals for a specific project, but they are also sometimes used to elicit ideas about a general project type, or to generate solutions to general problem.”2
This architectural investigation looks into the housing concepts presented in architectural competitions, and seeks to analyse the family patterns taking place in the space.
The project is an integrated part of a group of projects working on “Generationer, livsforløb og boligkarriere” at the Centre for Housing and Welfare. This research group investigates four Danish generations born in: 1920-30, 1940-50, 1960-70 and 1980+. The generations have settled permanently at different ages. The first two generations settled at the age of 25-30, the third generation settled at the age of 30-35, and the last generation has yet to settle.
In the course of this research project, it is of interest to examine the modern family home offered to each generation by the architects drawing houses at that time. Therefore the following periods of time span was investigated: 1950-55, 1970-75 and 1990-95.
The purpose of the research is to explore the relationship between the physical space and the social patterns taking place in the modern family home during the investigated time frames.
