Description
Are sea snakes limited to specific aquatic environments?
While we know that over 70 species of sea snakes occur in aquatic environments from the East coast of Africa to the West coast of America (a few specimens also found on the West coast of Africa), the question remains - what kind of environment do the different species prefer? Some studies suggest that sea snakes require freshwater and specific water temperatures and may have problems with high salinity. For a long time, it was commonly believed that sea snakes only inhabited shallow waters and were mainly found in coral reefs. We will challenge these ideas and provide case studies demonstrating that sea snakes are more opportunistic than previously thought.
