Kathrine Segel er i 2008 uddannet cand.scient.cons på Konservatorskolen, Det Kongelige Danske Kunstakademis Skoler for Arkitektur, Design og Konservering (KADK).
Kathrine er pt. i gang med PhD uddannelsen på KADK. Her forsker hun i hvorvidt nanoteknologi (i form af hydrogeler og mikroemulsioner) kan bruges til rensning af indlejret snavs på danske kalkmalerier fra middelalderen. Projektet, der løber fra 1. april 2017 til 31. marts 2020, er finansieret af bevillinger fra Kulturministeriets Forskningsudvalg, Augustinusfonden og Nationalmuseets ph.d.-pulje og udføres i et samarbejde mellem Nationalmuseet; Det Kgl. Danske Kunstakademis Skoler for Arkitektur, Design og Konservering; og Center for Colloid and Surface Science (CSGI) på Universitetet i Firenze.
Hendes forskning fokuserer på maleteknik, Matisse, Scherfig, Ancher, TalR, moderne kunst, samtidskunst, moderne oliefarver, kunstneriske processer, rensning, plast, maleri, skulptur og objekt.
