Cluster for Studies in Danish Design (CDD) is a new research cluster under development focusing on how insights into notions of Danish design as a concept and a value shaped by particular historical conditions, cultural contexts, and societal concerns can contribute to a current understanding of the concept and to the investigation of future scenarios of Danish desig.
The research program is based on the assumption that the modern Danish design heritage is considerably more complex than previously assumed, and that current perception of Danish design is a result of distinctive, particularly historiographic, and market-promoting constructions.
Furthermore, the project is based on the assumption that current attempts to revitalize Danish design in a late modern context have pointed in quite different directions and have not rarely been mutually conflicting.
The purpose of the research project is to investigate and discuss changes that the understandings of Danish design has undergone in recent years, focusing on how both historically conditioned conceptions and current competing discourses pave the way for meeting the current societal needs for new profound solutions.
The cluster brings perspectives from design history, design historiography, cultural studies intro design as well generative co-design approaches together to qualify a scientific framework for discussing Danish design in a historical and contemporary-oriented light as well as for developing a generative platform for future development work and scenario production.
CDD was launched in May 2018 under the direction of Professor, Dr. Ida Engholm and hosted by Royal Danish Academy - Architecture, Design, Conservation.
