Under Pressure – elastic, plastic and hybrid pneumatic architectural systems

Activity: Talk or presentation Lecture and oral contribution

Description

The talk will present architectural research projects that investigate different uses of air – as a forming medium, as a structural medium and as a switching medium – and intersect these uses with questions of material performance, structural type, fabrication method and spatial effect to explore novel architectural consequences. In parallel to these concerns with the ‘matter’ of architecture, each project develops computational design methods to support design enquiry and design production, resulting in novel design methods and concepts. Four projects will be presented - The Persistent Model series (projects 1,2 & 3), and the Complex Modelling sub-project ‘Inflated Restraint’. A brief summary of the project’s objectives, motivation, leading research question and positioning against the state of the art will be presented.
