‘The Danish Lettering tradition of the 20th Century’: University of Reading

Activity: Talk or presentation Lecture and oral contribution

    Description

The important Danish type designers of the 20th century all had architectural degrees, and to a great extent they were each other’s teachers, students and colleagues. This made it possible to preserve and develop a tradition.
The lecture will follow the line from Thorvald Bindesbøll to Knud V. Engelhardt and further through to the first Danish design professor Gunnar Biilmann Petersen and his successors Claus Achton Friis and Naur Klint. It ends where Bo Linnemann and his company Kontrapunkt Design launched their first customized typefaces for the Danish National Railway in the late nineties. The aim of the project is to highlight type design as part of the Danish design tradition and to explore the characteristic of Danish typography.
