Description

SUSTAINABILITY AND THE CULTURAL HERITAGE within the energy renovation of Danish dwellings.

Abstract
Sustainable development is often described as the combination of the social, the economic and the environmental values, while preservation of the historic environment is based on other values, the historic, the architectonic and the value of the positive relationship between the building and the immediate surroundings.

The energy renovation task and the preservation task are therefore based on very different approaches, which is currently creating several problems in the built environment and the task: to upgrade functionally and to energy optimise the building mass of the past. The building preservationists are opposing to consider the Climate challenges while renovating, and the energy renovating practice today is leaving the dwellings all over the country with irreversible changes in the architectural appearance.

In my research I investigate the existing gap between the different approaches toward the existing building mass and I see a need for a rapid change in today’s practice. I will try to establish a new perspective on preservation and sustainable development based on a common value model that assemble the objectives of both tasks and can be used to qualify the future energy renovation in the Danish dwellings.
