Power Relations Within the Situationist International: Jacqueline de Jong and Michelle Bernstein

Activity: Talk or presentation Lecture and oral contribution

Description

This lecture presents the Dutch artist Jacqueline de Jong, (*1939, NL), and the French writer/artist Michelle Bernstein, (*1932, F), the two major of the very few women within the Situationist International movement. The SI was an international organization of cultural revolutionaries active in postwar Europe between 1957 and 1972. On the basis of Marxist theory, the group formulated a harsh critique on the capitalist exploitation and degradation of people´s everyday life. Essential to situationist theory was the concept of the spectacle, which they tried to oppose by the creation of various different situations, providing alternative life experiences. During the period of the groups existence, there were about 70 members and less than a handful women, who were mostly partners or wifes of the male actors and did not contribute actively. De Jong and Bernstein were the only exception in this respect.
