Cultural Heritage and Strategies for the Cities of Tomorrow: Cultural Heritage and Massive Change

Activity: Talk or presentation Lecture and oral contribution

Description

The cultural heritage and values of any nation or civilization is embedded not only in its writing but also in its rituals, habits, food and the material things by which it surrounds itself. That also includes architecture.
However today most of the new architecture around the world, often made by the same international architect offices, all looks the same. How can we as architects approach this problem? How do we integrate unique cultural values without being regarded as old fashioned? And on the other hand; how do we avoid just copying from international magazines and doing so losing our cultural identity?
The lecture tries to discuss this problem by taking as departure the Danish modern architecture and design, which for about 60 years succeeded in being regarded as highly advanced in its modern approach yet very different from the German, French and American Modern Movement. The problem was solved by an abstract model which allowed for a transformation of both the old traditional architecture and the prototypes of the Modern Movement. Today this golden period for Danish architecture and design has vanished. The lecture tries to rethink this problem and set up some general rules for how we as architects can be more advanced than the most advanced yet enriching and developing our specific cultural heritage.
