Description

Architects all over the world are fascinated by algorithmic architecture which uses computer scripting to generate design solutions. Scripts are made out of series of written commands which can be programmed to solve complex geometric problems. Scripts can also be used to generate new, unexpected outcomes as they have the ability to evaluate, process and build on the given commands. In architecture scripting can be used in a variety of ways for different purposes ranging from automation of simple tasks to the management of entire design processes.

The subject has rapidly gained interest at the University of Oulu Department of Architecture. In October 2008 after the student-led workshop an Algorithmic Architecture Project Group was formed. In January 2009 the Finnish Cultural Foundation granted funds for the group to organise a seminar, workshop, publication and an exhibition.

We wish to welcome you all to the seminar Generate – From algorithm to structure, held at the University of Oulu Department of Architecture on the 30.10.2009. Key international speakers include Michael Hensel, David Serero, Luis Fraguada, Martin Tamke and Markus Wikar. During the seminar we will also hold the opening of an exhibition on algorithmic architecture and publish a book which presents the projects completed during the workshop and independently afterwards.

The seminar will be celebrated with an evening reception held at the Architectural Department.
