Description
The research seeks to examine the nature of emerging forms of urbanism in rapidly urbanising African Cities, the case of Maputo, Mozambique. The unit of analysis is the single household, the "home" as it appears in the so-called slums of Maputo, the living reality for the majority of the urban population. The process of urbanisation and researching change also depends on longitudinal investigation which in this case builds on previous work (25 years back) by all the involved researchers in Maputo. The research is interdisciplinary and involves planners, architects and antroplogists. The research is composed of 3 components: An overview macro study in order to identify the structural parametes for emerging urbanism and housing. 2. A built environment study of 100 selected houses and 3. An indepth ethnographic study of a smaller sample approx. 20 households identifying perceptins and notions of the concept of "home" in contemporary African city as an essencial narrative study. dissiminateion: a synthesis report at the end of 2011 and peer reviewed articles as results are produced. A book and a documentary is ultimately planned for albeit finance not yet in place.
4 institutiosn in 4 countries are involved: Copenhagen, Edingburg, Lisbon and Maputo.
