Abstract

The book itself is the result of a two year-long investigation on the nature of the economic influences in Jørn Utzon ́s architectural production and its manifestation in relation to the Danish Welfare State.
It aims to be a contemporary investigation related to the Scandinavian Architecture starting from the lines traced by its ancestors. It consists of a selection of a number of Utzon ́projects realized in the second half of 20th cent. significant for their relationship with the export and import of architectural production. Each Utzon ́project is re-digested by the students through a set of drawings and physical models introduced by critical texts that analyses the political and ideological meaning of Welfare architecture understood from today perspective.
The book is complemented by essays by Angela Gigliotti and Troels Rugbjerg that focus on four paths in relation to the Danish economic system and its development within the society and how it has affected the architectural profession. In other words, import of modes of production of architecture; import of cultural influences and techniques; export of welfare values and ideologies; export of architecture as products and solutions to be implemented. The postface by Fabio Gigone, co-editor of the column “Instructions and Manuals” (Abitare, 2007-10), debates about proselytes and ancestors, 10 years after that experience.
The materials here collected were developed by some of the editor ́ students. Students from the “Detailing and Sustainability in Scandinavian Architecture” elective course held by Angela Gigliotti in Spring (2017/2018) and Fall 2017 at DIS – Study Abroad in Scandinavia, Copenhagen, Denmark and from the TP3 History and Theory Workshop held by both editors in January 2018 at the Aarhus School of Architecture, Denmark.
