To treat or not to treat - that is the question: Structural treatment of canvas paintings in a Danish perspective

Abstract

The paper discusses the situation in Denmark up to and after the Greenwich conference on lining of canvas paintings, the many considerations and reflexions during the following 15-20 years, and how the period was filled up with curiosity, eagerness to try out new ways and ideas, testing methods and materials, contemplating failures, building new and glorious equipment - and longing for a better understanding of treatments and the structural behaviour of the paintings. In the 1990s the focus gradually changed, with more limited interventions, change in techniques and material use, less new development of treatment methods and materials, but a focus towards better understanding canvas painting structural behaviour and its consequences, by increasing scientific study of the subject.
