Abstract
The Modern Programme and the linear City
If a single argument were to be provided for a current review of architecture, modernism and Le Corbusier, it would have to be the concept of sustainable development. Today, there is broad consensus that sustainable development will set the agenda for the 21st century, and architecture will play a decisive role in this development. The question of sustainability adds modernism to the agenda anew, especially heroic modernism, the circle of CIAM and Le Corbusier, whom from the beginning placed the dwelling and the city in a sustainable framework – a pact with nature, even though they did not phrase it in this way, because this was not how the problem was presented at the time.
Modernism’s project, and that of Le Corbusier’s, was in theory and proposition a comprehensive and multifaceted project linked together by a general overall understanding – but also an unfinished and dynamic project. Modernism is history – and present. We have not yet seen modernism's successor, but note that the question of sustainability contains the potential for the next paradigm shift, the next architectural revolution – with modernism and the modern programme as a good foundation to move on from. The idea of the Linear city arose in the 1950's under the auspices of ASCORAL, as a radical innovation and an answer to the housing, urbanisation and regional question as well as a proposal for future transport and localisation. The design of a new city type is what Le Corbusier arrives at in the end and it is this idea that the paper will pay particular attention to in connection with the concept of sustainable development.
