Abstract
What might happen when we take a random worn-out space and ask ourselves what if this space in the future could be something else? Not limited by our present habits and technology. And what if those asking the questions are not concept designers but textile designers rooted in a practice of touching material and sensing colour, paying attention to the sensoric details? What if they speculate on future scenarios? How will they create material narratives to inform the new spaces?
In this zine we present students’ projects from an experimental workshop at Design School Kolding. The course was taught by Benjamin Rask and Maria Kirk Mikkelsen at the bachelor in textile design.
During the course students were asked to select a room or space in the building where Design School Kolding was temporarily housed. The proporty was originally a teacher’s college, it is now owned by the municipality and it is unknown what will happen to the neglected building after Design School Kolding moves back home to their own renovated building. That gave rise to speculations.
Each contribution to the zine consists of a poetic narrative presenting the speculative future for the chosen space, an analysis of the space in its present state consisting of a drawing and a collection of material samples, an excerpt of material experiments, and finally the speculative synthesis consisting of a drawing and a collection of material samples.
