Abstract

The knowledge on the exploitation of sea snakes is nearly nonexistent and very few investigations are focusing on catch and trade of sea snakes. One of these recent investigations have data from Vietnam (Cao et al. 2014), showing one of the largest snake harvests of today and observation in the last three years indicate a greater decline of sea snakes in the South China Sea and The Gulf of Thailand. Data from other areas in Asian is missing or only based on very few observations. However, fishermen in the Andaman Sea mention that they got fewer sea snake specimens and they are not as long as in the former time. Investigations from the Philippines also indicate that lost population because of exploitation are not returning to the areas exploited after the harvesting stops.
We therefore desperately need some monitoring programs to address further the sea snakes harvesting going on in Asia and to setting op conservations program to recover lost populations of sea snakes.
