Abstract

The reuse of materials in architecture is linked with revitalisation processes, alternative architecture, temporary structures or such concepts as: Design for Disassembly, Theory of Layers, 3R, Upcycling, Superuse, Urban Metabolism or Cradle-to-cradle. Architectural applications of mentioned theories include such buildings as: Villa Welpeloo in Enschede, Plattenpalast in Berlin, Open-Air Library in Magdeburg or Freitag Store in Zurich. The analysis of selected theories and case studies shows that the reuse of materials in architecture requires significant changes in the design and construction process, architectural education and social customs. This paper, through the analysis of selected theories and case studies, aims to create guidelines for the sustainable reuse of materials.
