Abstract

RawLam 3 explores the digitization of the timber value chain – from forest to building product – and asks how, through leveraging new, high-resolution digital imaging techniques – this development can be harnessed to use the forest resource in a more considerate and sensitive way. Computed tomography (CT) scanning makes the interior heterogeneity of the sawn log visible and therefore available for steering the further processing of the log. We investigate how we can strategically map the sawn resource onto specific areas of glue-laminated timber beams, integrating a wider variety of material quality into the final product. Working directly with the felled log also opens up opportunities for steering the aesthetic and textural outcome of the final elements – retaining and exposing some of the raw uniqueness of the tree.
