Abstract

Architectural cultural heritage is increasingly employed as a strategic tool in urban planning, offering financial and environmental benefits. However, integrating heritage preservation with development challenges traditional approaches to heritage designation and valuation. This article explores the potentials and challenges of this integration through the case of Godsbanearealet in Aarhus, Denmark. Once an industrial freight area, the site has evolved into a dynamic cultural environment shaped by cultural entrepreneurs, particularly the Institute for X (IFX). The case highlights how heritage practices have expanded to include intangible, contemporary, and locally rooted elements, aligning with the New Heritage discourse. By examining the site's transformation into an urban neighborhood, we discuss the democratization of heritage practices and the evolving role of cultural environments in urban development.
