Abstract
Powers of Drawing - Aesthetics of Transformation
A suggestion by Robin Evans says that the power of drawing is in its ‘distinctness from and unlikeness to the thing that is represented, rather than its likeness to it´. Powers of Drawing take Evans suggestion as an initiator and expands it, asking how and what kind of unlikeness of architectural drawing could be generative - space considered intertwined with time . The work argues that drawing-transformations, as trans-medial and intermedial spatial-temporal processes, besides other situated knowledges should be explored as exchange-experience of movement between drawing and viewer/participator/actor. Like in ‘the open work’ of contemporary art , where work and the experience of work, seen as originating from the same level, are parallel to processes of becoming.
Processes of becoming are engaged with movement, hence the connotations and correlations between becoming – changing – moving. Powers of Drawing engages the aesthetics of movement , as such something else than that which moves - the dancer is a mobile that transfers movement, not movement itself. Exposed rhythmically as forms of action and space-generating forces and figures at ‘eye level´, my work searches to let drawing-agencies and effects transfer movement into affects that moves us - potentially transgressing representation.
Powers of Drawing - Aesthetics of Transformation will present movement series that interchange heterogenous figures and forces, also engaging the societal. Series of movement-flow crossed by ruptures and displacements are worked out in exchange with series of ‘arrested or condensed’ movement which incorporates ‘slow’ cartographic figure-discussions as well. ‘Mobile’ and ‘immobile’ drawing, respectively, catches and exploits rhythmic feeling and expression as something in-between the heterogeneous elements and media. Something that arises between different milieux and interacts with our encompassing ability of perception, imagination and alertness to unexpected connections - opening a ‘cloud of different measuring points’ with collective aesthetic sensitivity.
