N2 - The report presents results from the SIP project (System Representation in Process Control). PIECES is a graphical, interactive user interface system designed and programmed as a tool for building, manipulating and using a Multilevel Flow Model (MFM - Morten Lind, Tecnical University of Denmark). An MFM describes a plant by describing the condition and the flow of its materials (mass, energy), which form the process. The model is built by the planner, who uses the MFM-system as a planning tool. Several advantages are obtained by planning the flows of the materials in a plant i.e. building an MFM describing the plant, and then use the MFM as the basis for the choice of the components, which shall perform the physical process. When the plant has been set up, the planned points for measuring and regulating in the model are connected to the corresponding points in the plant. Then the MFM, which contains the software for running the plant, is used by the operator as the interface for running, controlling and regulating the plant. When restructuralizing the plant the planner edits a copy of the MFM,which then forms the model for the rebuilding of the plant. When finished the planned connections between model and plant are established, and the restructured plant is ready to be used. This report is 1 of 2.Report 1: Design of PIECES.Report 2: Programming of PIECES.
