Photobook Week Aarhus 2019: 6th Edition: Flatness

Photobook Week Aarhus 2019 was the sixth edition of Photobook Week Aarhus. The festival took place from 3 October to 6 October 2019. The festival is an open forum for discussions on the photobook as a medium.
This year Photobook Week Aarhus and Art Weekend Aarhus were cooperating and several activities and exhibitions were featured on both platforms.
The theme of the festival was “Flatness”. A number of the festival’s exhibitions – such as for example “The Rebellious Photobook”, curated by the Portuguese photo historian Jose Luis Neves - questioned the seemingly flat surface of the book.
A key exhibition of the festival was “New Topographics in Photobooks”, curated by the German photobook expert Thomas Wiegand and at show at ARoS Aarhus Art Museum.
Other exhibitions included “Asia 8”, featuring the winners of the Steidl Book Award in collaboration with the Singapore International Photo Festival; “Grethe Grathwol: Organisings. Photography and Photobooks” presenting Grathwol’s pioniering work from the 1960s and 1970s; and ”Twentysix artist’s books – some of them could also be considered as photobooks”, curated by Anne Elisabeth Toft, which set out to celebrate and shed light on the visual artist Lasse Krog Møller’s production of artist’s books and photobooks.
The festival’s regional theme was on Chilean and on Swedish photobooks.
Talks were given by among others Reinhard Matz, Irina Chmyreva, Niclas Östlind, Luis Weinstein, and Tatiana Sardá.
