Abstract

This paper presents work in progress experimenting with rendered and photographed 360° panoramas for daylight evaluation and representation in virtual reality (VR). The work is part of an ongoing project aimed at bridging the gap between quantitative daylight simulations and representing visually perceived daylight quality. Northern daylight with its great yearly variations in daylight hours form the basis of the daylight investigations. A full-scale daylight studio, its digital twin and a 1:10 scale model of the daylight studio are used in the investigations and illustrate the findings. Initial 360° diurnal recordings in the daylight studio in varying weather conditions revealed very dynamic daylight situations when viewed in time-lapse playback. 360° photographic captures of the 1:10 scale model in a controlled daylight environment allow a bodily experience of the daylight-illuminated space in VR suitable for daylight decisions at early design phases as well as for presentation purpose. Finally, experiments with separating render passes from a digital twin model resulted in alternative abstractions of daylight representation in the form of 360° False Colour Luminance panoramas displayed in VR as well as unwrapped in 2D.
