Abstract

All decisions made to create a design proposal, are based on the information the designer has about the specific criteria that influence the design: the desired function and aesthetic. The design proposal is influenced by the kind of data that is represented to the designer about the design requirements, and by the methodologies that are used to search this data for possible designs. the Dry Stone Waller is a piece of software that was written to investigate the possibilities of a given set of material in achieving certain design goals. Creating this program became an investigation into the "strategic" nature of design tools and their relationship to the sequential "tactical" decisions made in choosing and placing particular stones to a make a construct out of irregular components - a dry stone wall.
