Abstract

As historic houses transition into house museums, there is a prevailing assumption that they should be preserved in a static state, reflecting a particular moment in time. However, these houses could have inevitably undergone changes even before their conversion, shaped by the lives and activities of their inhabitants. House museums are tasked with representing the lived experiences of their former occupants, yet determining what should be preserved, what may be altered, and which historical period should be prioritized presents a significant challenge.

This paper employs the Ancher’s House Museum, the former residence of Danish painters Anna and Michael Ancher, as a case study. It explores the spatial transformations of the Ancher House through different stages of inhabitation, its re-purposing as a museum, and the curatorial strategies implemented by the Art Museums of Skagen.

The study highlights the complexity of the house's history, and the decisions made by the Art Museums of Skagen to convey the artists’ stories in a way that reflects both the continuity of the artists’ lives and the house’s preservation frozen in time. The dynamic exhibition model incorporates rotating artifacts based on the family’s diaries and paintings, enhancing the fluidity of the living situation. By engaging diverse audiences through site-specific activities, the museum revitalizes the historic space while maintaining the spatial function and purpose of the house. This case study provides insights into the nuanced processes of preserving, conserving, and curating house museums while balancing historical integrity with contemporary relevance.
