Abstract
For decades, lowering the energy performance of buildings has been the main focus to reduce CO2 outlet. In time energy performance has almost become synonymous with a sustainable building culture and has primarily manifested itself in a rising amount of insulation in constructions. But new knowledge on material embedded energy indicates, that performance energy no longer is the main problem, but the materials used in construction is also represents a
significant amount of CO2. Energy performance as the main object had its legitimizations in the 70ies, where fossil fuels was the primary resource, but in a future with scarce materials and green(er) energy sources, the traditional method seems one-sided and old fashion. The positivistic models governing the methods on energy performance and insulation in constructions does not consider how other architectural aspects of the build environment might also help reduce
the general environmental impact. One might ask, if it is even possible for the building industry to take on the task of constructing a more sustainable building culture, without including a broader holistic view on building physics?
