Abstract

In this article I introduce early steps in my work with adjoining and developing concepts relevant to the analysis, as well as the artistic design of video projected motion graphics in spatial contexts. I present two empirical cases that are used as a starting point for my analytical conceptualization of various design elements in an analysis of the way in which these elements are integrated and used in the creation of particular experiences of space, atmosphere and artistic expression. On the basis of this analysis I present a preliminary construction of a design model including some design elements such as e.g. space, tone, color, movement, time and timing. Developing this design model has two purposes. The first is as a tool for analyzing empirical examples or cases of where motion graphics is used in spatial experience design. The second is as a tool that can be used in the actual design process, and therefore it should be constructed as such. Since the development of the design model has this double focus, I involve design students in design laboratories related to my practice as
a teacher in visual communication design and production design. I also reflect on how an initial design laboratory may be set-up and used. Finally I describe how this design lab can be used as a method for creating both practical knowledge of the manner in which the design model may be applied in actual design processes, as well as how these processes can be used for pointing out design elements or dimensions which would benefit from a more theorized and conceptualized approach in order to be (re-) integrated into the general design model.
