Abstract

The chapter aims to discuss how embodied knowledge of an expert ceramicist can be integrated in the use of digital technology through its interaction with their hands. While digital tools enable the ceramicist to work with a high degree of complexity that is not possible with traditional techniques and manual workflows, they create a barrier to working directly by hand in clay. Nevertheless, through an example of robotic wire cutting, this chapter shows how computational tools enable the ceramicist to utilize both traditional craft-based knowledge and advanced digital tools.
