Dust-cot: A cast of interior affinities

Publikation: Bidrag til bog/antologi/rapportBidrag til bog/antologiForskningpeer review

Abstract

This article describes 'Dust-cot', a site-specific wall finish made of gypsum plaster and a witty and transformed vision of the interior wainscot. Made by a technique called ‘sledging’, it neither protects the wall nor invites us to clean it. Rather, dust-cot expresses the futility of the finish as a modern directive to repel dust. Through material and surface relief, it summons the dust-motes of the room to act as slow and unremitting agents in its own finishing. Dust-cot is itself finished by a coat of dust, and it should never have the dust cleaned as long as it remains installed.
