Developing adaptive planning methods as a response to changing waterscapes in the context of Danish coastal cities

LAVA (Landscape and Water / *LAndskab og VAndet*) investigates adaptive urban planning responses to climate change in Denmark’s coastal urban landscapes. In this context, climate change manifests through sea-level rise, increased extreme precipitation, rising groundwater tables, and recurrent flooding. The project is a landscape architectural research-through-design and interaction research initiative that examines how landscape practices—particularly reading the landscape—can inform adaptive planning under climatic uncertainty.

LAVA is based on interdisciplinary collaboration between landscape researchers, municipal planners, decision-makers, and a city water company, integrating landscape and water into existing planning processes and policies. Its aim is to develop methods for holistic and adaptive urban development by fostering cross-sectoral collaboration and leveraging water catchments as a structuring principle. The main case study focuses on a large watershed and coastal zone, addressing complex challenges of flooding and water management. Through mapping, fieldwork, and stakeholder engagement, the project seeks to generate practical tools and knowledge to support Danish municipalities in navigating climate-related uncertainties and advancing resilient urban planning practices.
