Abstract

According to a circular economy concept, building materials and construction and demolition waste may circulate in continuous, technological cycles within the city. Adequate policies, tools, infrastructure and urban planning enable sustainable metabolism of building materials in urban areas. This article investigates two waste management systems and related policies, regulations and planning tools in countries, where the level of recycling of construction and demolition waste is high – in Germany and the Netherlands. Presented analysis of an integrated approach to construction and demolition waste aims to establish inspiring guidelines for sustainable metabolism of building materials.
