Abstract

This article concentrates on the labor associated with biogenic materials by focusing on how reed and thatch are used in contemporary construction. It discusses the materials involved, as well the life cycle of nature, building, and human labor that supports the [re]introduction of reed/thatch into the building industry. It aims to describe the ecologies that support both the biological and the quasi-industrialization of this material, as well as the forms of embodied knowledge required to transform a reed harvest into a thatch construction.
