Abstract

'Alternative Descriptions' focuses on creating alternative visualisations of climate data through an iterative process.

The ecological crisis requires both practical solutions and a rethinking of its depiction. Philosophers like Timothy Morton and Bruno Latour highlight the limitations of traditional depictions. Morton’s ‘hyperobjects’ concept reveals the complexity of ecological phenomena, while Latour advocates for ‘alternative descriptions’ as essential for tackling the climate crisis differently.

Iterative design enabled students to develop multiple versions of climate data visualisations from reports from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, integrating various design theories and critical considerations into their process. The climate crisis is too complex to be depicted in a singular manner.
