ENVIRONMENTAL SIMULATION IN ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN DESIGN

    Projektdetaljer

    Beskrivelse

Environmental simulation is a powerful digital tool for effectively meeting sustainability goals in architecture. Although analog tools, guidelines and design recommendations provide with some support for designing sustainably, simulation is an essential tool for architects to predict the performance of design options related to urban spaces and buildings form, program, materials and technologies. It provides feedbacks in multiple areas, including, among others, operational and embodied energy, indoor and outdoor ventilation, comfort and daylighting.
This book intends to break down the barriers in architectural practice that have, until now impeded the effective use of simulation. There is a complete introduction to environmental simulation in architecture and urban design – helping architects to achieve creative and innovative designs. It is explained how it is key to see performance optimization as an inspiring chance to create stimulating environments using tools, rather than just focusing on optimization of technical subsystems.
Environmental Simulation in Architecture and Urban Design discusses the development of simulation and modeling technologies, and the ways in which they offer valuable feedback to architects, from early to advanced stages of architectural design. Using this book, architects will finally be able to make sound design decisions to improve environmental performance. A selection of international case studies further describes innovative design scenarios by exploring technical and cultural implications. For each case study, design strategy and simulation phases are discussed, showing their impact on cities and building forms, programs and fabric.

Finally the book guides through the jungle of over 500 available simulation tools; providing insight on which analysis methods can best serve to meet performance targets defined by regulation and rating systems including LEED in the US, BREEAM in the UK, DGNB in Germany, Green Star in Australia and CASBEE in Japan. The book is highly visual and easy to browse, enabling a quick overview of the subject in parallel with an in-depth analysis. Design principles and concepts are illustrated with step-by-step procedures for integrating simulation in practice. Design methods and key issues are explained through annotated design tables, charts and references to further resources. A variety of simulation graphics and color photos exemplify concepts and applications.
