Research activities

  • Study of prehistoric dyes, with special focus on: their impact on the state of preservation of the textiles, Indigotin, dyeing with fermented dye plants, and dyestuff identification.
  • Qualitative and quantitative analyses of the natural pigmentation in wool by microscopy: transmission light microscopy (TLM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).
  • Analyses of Japanese wallpaper that imitates gilded leather, with special focus on their structural composition, and identification of the individual components in order to approach a conclusion concerning their origin.  
  • Bark cloth (Tapa) from Polynesia with special focus on: identification of the fibres, assessment of the degree of degradation, and conservation
  • Archaeological textiles with special focus on: identification of the fibres, assessment of degrees of degradation and stabilisation.
