Beskrivelse

Interview related to the installation of the Shimioni Cave weave at the British Pavilion, Venice Biennale 2025.

Emne

At this year’s Venice Architecture Biennale, the UK Pavilion transforms architecture into a profound exploration of colonial history in Kenya, power structures and the materials of the future. Perhaps the most impressive part of the exhibition is the installation “Shimoni Slave Cave”. A 1:1 scale, ceiling-to-ceiling woven rattan structure symbolically transports the visitor to the Shimoni Caves in Kenya, where slaves were held and later sold to arriving ships. This is how the installation’s authors, Cave_bureau, together with Phil Ayres and Jack Young, interpret this painful history for humanity through architecture and traditional crafts. Rūta Leitanaitė talks to Prof. Phil Ayres (Head of the Chair for Biohybrid Architecture, Royal Danish Academy).
