Christopher Burke is a typographer and his interest in graphic design history developed alongside his practice. So his approach is informed by an appreciation of the craft practised by historical figures. He has concentrated on studying modernist typography of the early twentieth century, and employs well-worn methods – such as concentrating on an individual, looking closely at their work and writings, and digging around in archives – in order to get below the surface of subjects and to examine broader connections. In this talk, Burke will reflect on his historical work and examine the importance of history to current practice.
Christopher Burke is Research Fellow at the Department of Typography & Graphic Communication, University of Reading, UK. He has designed four typefaces (Celeste, Celeste Sans, Pragma and Parable) and written two books, Paul Renner: the art of typography (1998) and Active literature: Jan Tschichold and New Typography (2007). He co-edited Isotype: design and contexts, 1925–1971 (2013).
