Research Talk: “DIY design, improvisation and urban places – a talk about young people and self-organised practices”

Aktivitet: Tale eller præsentation Foredrag og mundtlige bidrag

Beskrivelse

How do young people design urban places by themselves? What potentials do they see in urban space?
Through two ethnographic fieldworks I have followed 60 young people and their self-organised use of Danish cities in order to explore and understand social, sensory and playful potentials of urban space. In Denmark we have educational tradition for defining leisure spaces for young people, where
decisions about where, when, what and with whom young people can participate are organised in advance. So why do some young people reject more predefined spaces towards urban space? The aim of this presentation is to nuance how young people are driven towards a Do-It- Yourself design process and how they improvise with sensory, material, social and spatial aspects of urban space. I will illustrate how young people in Horsens and Aarhus question and push the boundaries of participatory societal structures in order to design places suitable for skateboarding, Doom concerts, meetups and raves.
