Beskrivelse

Digital fabrication promises to revolutionize architecture. The seamless combination of digital technologies with physical construction processes will pave the way for the realisation of radically new designs. These advancements promise to improve efficiency in production and augment building sustainability. With the National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) Digital Fabrication, initiated at ETH Zurich, Switzerland is assuming a global leading role in the development of digital construction.

Towards a digital building culture

To fully exploit the potential of digital fabrication, intensive interdisciplinary cooperation is necessary. Switzerland is predestined for such a role as it has the necessary resources, a high level of expertise in all relevant disciplines, and a tradition of knowledge sharing between research and industry. The most talented researchers in the fields of architecture, engineering, materials science, computer science, and robotics from the leading Swiss research institutions will work within the NCCR Digital Fabrication. The ambition is to develop new methods of design and construction through which ground-breaking technological solutions arise. This pioneering work fosters a digital value shift towards a new building culture. The result is an increase in innovation power of societal relevance, as it sustainably improves the quality of the future built environment.

The National Centres of Competence in Research (NCCRs) are a research instrument of the Swiss National Science Foundation. They promote long-term interdisciplinary research networks in areas of strategic importance for the future of Swiss science, economy and society.
