Lecture: Sharing between households. From Collective Rationalization to Cohousing Communities

Aktivitet: Tale eller præsentation Foredrag og mundtlige bidrag

Beskrivelse

Denmark has a rich history of collective living experiments dating back to the late 19th century, with pre-cohousing projects exploring shared facilities, communal dining, and alternative domestic arrangements. The cohousing movement that emerged in the 1970s built upon these precedents, creating resident-initiated communities that balance private dwellings with extensive shared spaces. This lecture examines how cohousing addresses contemporary challenges through five analytical dimensions: social aspects (community building, diverse households, intergenerational living), environmental aspects (materials, energy systems, biodiversity), economic aspects (ownership models, shared resources), technical aspects (flexible building systems, passive design), and processual aspects (establishment, construction, inhabitation). Drawing on recent Danish housing experiments, including The Housing Lab (Boliglaboratoriet) projects, the presentation explores innovative approaches such as intergenerational wooden housing, urban rooftop farms integrated with commercial buildings, housing designed specifically for single parents, self-build communities, and adaptive reuse of vacant rural properties. These case studies demonstrate how architectural design and collaborative living models contribute to more sustainable, resilient, and socially connected urban and rural environments.
