Beskrivelse
What:The newly formed ARNEN – Artistic Research Network on Extractivism in the Nordics invited in collaboration with PASS – Center for Practice-based Art Studies for a one-day seminar on resource extraction in the geographical North.
Why:
The growing demand for minerals and metals for the energy transition from fossil to renewable sources increased militarization and securitization, and shifting geopolitical interests have led Europe to adopt the Critical Raw Materials (CRM) Act. Through the Act, Europe seeks to secure a stable supply of CRM by expanding mining operations on the European continent, including the northernmost areas of the Nordic countries and Sápmi.
Explored through artistic and spatial practices, the seminar raises questions about the politicization of the North as an operationalized landscape of resources; the materiality of digitalization and electrification; and the impacts on human and non-human habitats.
