The purpose of the lecture is two folds: to enrich and transform our understanding of post-war Danish domestic architecture and the impact that traditional Japanese architecture had on it, and to stimulate the dialogue and interest in Nature-inclusive architectural interior design.

In the Anthropocene mankind has become the dominating force on the Earth. Most of our urban areas have been designed in ways that degrade the environment and disconnect us from Nature. This dominant paradigm of development and design of the modern built environment deprives us of the benefits of the interaction with the natural surroundings and leads us to a growing placelessness. In this era of necessary reflection on human-Nature relationship and the role of architecture as a mediator mean, some postwar-Danish and traditional-Japanese buildings offer profound lessons for our own time. The internationally renowned Danish domestic buildings built in the 50's and early 60's, left a leading legacy that has greatly influenced the domestic sphere and has further led the world in terms of good design and welfare. They are deeply inspired by the relationship between humans and Nature mediated through the architectural space, and provide exemplary sensory experiences of the natural surroundings by complex mechanisms, sometimes without visual contact to it. Moreover, there are significant parallels between some of these pieces of architecture and specific traditional Japanese buildings, particularly with “Sukiya style” architecture. In Japan life has traditionally been understood to be in communion with Nature. I will be presenting a part of my ongoing research project Nature-In, showing how this fascinating dialogue takes place in some outstanding case-studies. In addition, I will illuminate the integration of some biophilic design patterns into them. The objective is to transfer this knowledge from Danish and Japanese architectural heritage to a sustainable contemporary design practice merging scientific perspectives, in order to effectively improve human-Nature daily interaction through the experience of the domestic interiors of the future.
