On Solid Human Foundations: Anthropologies of Modern Architecture
This conference invites participants to re-examine the buildings, writings, drawings, and narratives of modern architecture in order to uncover the anthropological perspectives that have long been overlooked. Confronted with the accelerating pace, perils, and possibilities of modernization, many architects turned their gaze both far and back—to the distant, the archaic, the folklore, and the “primitive,” in a deliberate effort to grasp the essentials of human needs and ends. They traveled or immersed themselves in museums, seeking to recall the archetypal physique, perception, and psychology of humankind. Extending their anthropological inquiry to their fellow contemporaries and envisioning the modern individual as a “primordial human” caught within a historic moment, they sought to rediscover architecture’s relationship to the human condition. While these investigations have inspired subsequent generations of architects, the deeper anthropological underpinnings have often gone unrecognized in architectural scholarship. This conference aims to address that gap by inviting critical explorations into how modern architects and the contemporary practices they motivated have offered alternatives to the subjectivist, determinist, or consumerist tendencies, reaffirming and restoring the essentials of human comfort and happiness as a solid foundation for architecture.
