In this paper we will elaborate on environmental influences on the experience of privacy through the use of a Geographic Information System (GIS). By mapping the whereabouts of Christian IV of Denmark (r. 1596-1648) we will reconstruct the travels and most visited residences of the Danish Monarch. What motivated the mobility and is there an evolution through the lifetime of Denmark’s longest reigning king? Was privacy experienced differently in an urban vs. in a rural context? Was there a need to retire from the busy court capital? Geographic Information Software (GIS) is used as a tool to reveal otherwise invisible geographic information through visualizations and data inquiries. As an analysis engine, GIS allows us to examine and cross-reference data, reveal patterns and relationships, but also to uncover anomalies, leading to interesting results concerning the mobility of monarchs.
